Did you know that one of the producers on Jay-Z's latest platinum-selling album Magna Carta... Holy Grail is but 16-years old? Yes, it's hard to believe but the fire track "Crown" was produced by WondaGurl who is only in her sweet sixteens. Known to her parents as Ebony Oshunrinde, the Nigerian-Canadian up-and-comer has been making beats since the age of 9.
By the age of 14 she became the winner of Toronto's Battle of The Beatmakers and landed a management deal. In an interview with MTV News she talked about the 'Crown' beat which samples Sizzla's 'Solid As A Rock'. "I was at home one day looking for reggae samples for a while and I finally found this one that was crazy," she explains. "And I took it and I cut it up and I put it in the software FL Studio. I started building around it, adding 808s and the more I built, the more I knew what I wanted. After that, I knew I wanted to send it to Travi$ Scott."At the time she didn't know she would be in for such a big surprise. A few days later the Houston rapper signed to Grand Hustle replied with, "I'm about to change your life."
Scott played the track to Jay-Z, and phoned her to say, "You are on Jay Z's album, congratulations." For now WondaGurl is still honing her craft while finishing up her studies at high school, but big things can be expected of this budding star.
